Western Australians have an affinity with the sea, the challenges that it presents and an admiration of those who take her on. It is this history and connection with the sea that has seen great Western Australian sailors challenge the world, such as David Dicks, the youngest sailor to make a full circumnavigation of the globe, and Jon Sanders' epic three times circumnavigation of the world. Western Australia's lively port location of Fremantle, a short distance from the capital city Perth, is the ideal venue to host the expected 1,500 competitors, 1,000 boats and an audience of tens of thousands of people likely to gather along the coast for the ISAF 2011 Sailing World Championships. This is in part due to the famous ‘Fremantle Doctor', a south west wind that fans the shores of Western Australia, making for some of the most challenging racing conditions.
