Our Story - Event Excellence

When you look at Perth's outstanding record of securing and successfully staging world sporting events, it is apparent that the city has the necessary credentials to successfully stage the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Fremantle has a rich maritime heritage and experience in hosting significant sailing events - look no further than the first America's Cup to be staged outside of America in over 100 years. The challenges were enormous, but the event received accolades for standards of organisation, and the atmosphere surrounding the event. Add the three successful host port presentations for the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race and numerous other international sailing events and the result is a significant base of skills, experience and knowledge.

Perth is the only city in the world to be awarded the prestigious FINA Swimming World Championships and the ITU Triathlon World Championships twice and the Johnnie Walker Classic Golf Tournament (Australasia's most prestigious golf event) two years in a row. The ‘can-do' attitude of the city has also been evident to the success, kudos and positive publicity bought to other events such as the UCI World Track Cycling Championships, the ISAF World Windsurfing Championships, the UCI BMX World Championships and the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Western Australia continues to successfully host annual events such as the Hyundai Hopman Cup Tennis, Ironman Western Australia and the Red Bull Air Race. In 2008 and 09 the National Surf Life Saving Championships and its 8,000 competitors will also return to Perth and the Johnnie Walker Classic will once again return to Perth in 2009 for a fourth time.
