Our Plan - Environment

The Western Australia 2011 Organising Committee will develop and implement an environmental plan to increase and develop awareness of environmental issues amongst all sailing stakeholders.

The Western Australia 2011 Organising Committee has set out the following objectives in order to respect and safeguard our environment leading up to, during and after the 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships:

  • Develop and implement an environmental programme for the sport and the event;
  • Implement a full recycling program consistent with many that are already in place in Perth and Fremantle;
  • Increase and develop awareness of environmental issues amongst all sailing stakeholders;
  • Support the development of the Fremantle event venue to ensure it is sustainable for the environment, economy and community; and
  • Position sailing as environmentally aware.

The 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships will aim to be as good for the environment as it is for the rest of Western Australia. The key strategies for achieving this will be:

  • Waterwise - using water-efficient appliances, collecting stormwater and recycling wastewater at the venue;
  • Carbon neutral - reducing energy consumption, increasing public transport use and planting trees to off-set carbon emissions;
  • Low waste - discouraging littering and reducing waste that goes to landfill by recycling. Delivering a recycled waste program throughout the entire 2011 ISAF Championships venue;
  • Providing environmentally friendly products for boat maintenance and anti-fouling. Encouraging the buying of local products on shore and supporting the sustainability of Fremantle sailing industries;
  • Education – educate the crew about the basic rules of protecting the environment while on the water; and
  • Seabed – ensuring courses avoid sailing into reed banks, reed beds, and any other areas of vegetation along the shoreline.
